Developing a winning team
is the dream of all coaches and athletic departments around the United
States and the world. Whether it is collegiate football, Little League
or rugby, coaches throughout history have tried to find that winning
formula for developing a champion. "How will I inspire an individual to
become a part of a team?
How can I teach a player to give his heart and soul to his peers and
mold himself into the best that he or she can be?" Obviously, there are
many theories and methods employed by thousands of coaching staffs. The
TUG is a revolutionary invention that has been developed to help
coaches find the special magic that produces a champion. It takes a
basic technique that has been used for decades in football training and
turns it into a safe and effective way to develop teamwork as well as
individual strength.
As Zabel reflected back upon his football career, he recalled
the drills that coaches inflicted upon him as player. At OU, stick
wrestling was a common activity that Zabel can only describe as
“brutal”. In the NFL, a similar drill was common, only utilizing a
towel. These activities in and of themselves were not the challenge,
instead it was the competitive spirit that was pulled from the players.
While at Curry College, Zabel developed a tug of war drill for his
players using old tires. As the offense and defense competed, he was
able to see the energy, excitement, competition and strength
conditioning that was produced from this single activity. As he
observed the benefits that this activity provided, he began to imagine
a coaching tool that could provide weight and foster competitiveness while also
being a safer activity for ambitious athletes. The TUG, or “TUGGER”, was
born to provide an outlet for safer, competitive training for football
teams.
The TUG measures 9x30x36 and is made out of a rubber-like resin that is
firm, yet flexible. Each device has two handles on opposite sides and
has the capacity to hold up to 15 gallons of water, which creates a way
to harness inertia. By putting 10 gallons of water in a 15 gallon
container, there is room for movement, therefore creating inertia. The
Tug creates a challenge that is unlike any traditional static weight.
The Tug can be ordered in any of 8 different colors, Royal Blue, Light Blue, Red, Yellow, Green, Purple, Maroon and Orange.
The Tug is currently being utilized by the following NCAA Division I
football programs: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Syracuse, Texas, Florida,
Baylor, Colorado, UCLA, Central Florida, La Salle, UMass, Colgate, West
Virginia, Michigan, Maryland, West Texas A&M, Murray State, Western
Illinois, Southern Mississippi and countless High Schools. The feedback
from these coaching staffs has been extremely valuable, because other
uses for the Tug are also being discovered. It can be used as a weight
sled, or it can be flipped like a big tractor tire. Players can curl
it, row it upright, press it, perform triceps work, and even use it as an
anchor when doing sit ups or leg lifts.
